Sinus Lift

With maxillary sinus lift, we refer to a surgery that allows you to increase the amount of bone available, in order to place a dental implant. The operation consists of an augmentation (a real elevation) of the maxillary sinus membrane, obtained by placing bone in the space that is created
between the sinus membrane (which is elevated) and the floor of the maxillary sinus.

The surgeon prepares the operating field by opening a small lateral window in the maxillary sinus and lifts the sinus membrane. In the created cavity, the prepared heterologous-bone biomaterial and the envisaged implants are inserted and then the sinus is sealed with a collagen membrane. The operation is concluded by closing the window created with stiches.

The operation is performed under local anesthesia, like other cases of dental surgery. The duration of the surgery does not exceed the 30 minutes timeframe and the patient does not feel discomfort during the procedure. At the end of the surgery, a painkiller will be administered to
decrease any type of pain.

Who can be a candidate for the surgery and what are the contraindications?

To find out if it is possible for you to perform a maxillary sinus lift operation, one of our doctors must perform an orthopanoramic radiography which is necessary to realize the situation of the dental and bone structure. A CT scan of the jaw bone is often recommended to make an exact assessment of the amount of the bone present. These procedures allow to evaluate the sinus membrane, its thickness and the possible presence of septa within the maxillary sinus.
The patient must be aware of the fact that there are contraindications that could make the performing of the surgery inadvisable, such as:

  • Sinus problems
  • Cancer
  • Cyst
  • Pre-existing injuries to the teeth or in the area affected by the surgery.

In any case, you will be able to discuss these contraindications with the doctor who will perform the operation.

What are the benefits of sinus lift?

  • Carrying out this operation has significant advantages:
Through this type of dental surgery, we are able to offer to even those patients who have little bone present, the possibility to embody fixed and stable teeth.
  • Through a small intervention, we are able to obtain the bone depth necessary ,to ensure the insertion of a titanium implant of the right length. In this way, the new artificial tooth will have greater stability and guarantee of duration over time.
  • Both the small lift and the big lift allow for the regeneration of new bone tissue in the points where the patient is deficient, so that dental implants can be applied even where there is no bone.
  • A great advantage of the surgery is that it is neither painful nor too invasive.

If you want new fixed teeth, but have little bone, the solution to your problem could be Sinus Lift Surgery.
